The Extended Tidal Tails of NGC 7089 (M2)

چکیده

Using photometry and proper motions from Gaia Early Data Release 3, we detect a 45 degree-long trailing stellar debris stream associated with the old, metal-poor globular cluster NGC 7089. With width on order of 100 pc, extended appears to be as dynamically cold coldest known streams found date. There is some evidence for an leading tail extending between 28 37 degrees cluster, though greater distance this tail, combined that are virtually indistinguishable those foreground stars, make detection much less certain. The motion profile path sky not well matched using simple Galactic potential comprised purely disk, bulge, spherical halo. However, addition moving, massive (M = 1.88 x 10^(11) solar masses) Large Magellanic Cloud brings model predictions into better agreement observables. We provide tables most highly ranked candidate stars follow-up by ongoing future spectroscopic surveys.

Segregation and Tidal Tails of the Globular Cluster NGC 7492

We present a wide field CCD photometric study of Galactic globular cluster NGC 7492. The derived V R color-magnitude diagram extends down to about 3.5 mag below the cluster main sequence turn-off. The field covers 42 × 42 about 3 times larger than the known tidal radius of this cluster. The sample of cluster member candidates obtained by CMD-mask process has been used to construct luminosity an...

The Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of galactic globular clusters – II. The seven stellar populations of NGC 7089 (M2)

We present high-precision multiband photometry for the globular cluster (GC) M2. We combine the analysis of the photometric data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic GCs GO-13297, with chemical abundances by Yong et al., and compare the photometry with models in order to analyse the multiple stellar sequences we identified in the colour–magnitude diagram. We find...

The Discovery of Tidal Tails around the Globular Cluster Ngc 5466

We report the discovery of tidal tails around the high-latitude Galactic globular cluster NGC 5466 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Neural networks are used to reconstruct the probability distribution of cluster stars in u, g, r, i, z space. The tails are clearly visible, once extra-galactic contaminants and field stars have been eliminated. They extend ∼ 4 • on the sky, corresponding t...

Uv Morphology and Star Formation in the Tidal Tails of Ngc 4038/39

We present GALEX FUV (1530 Å) and NUV (2310 Å) observations of the archetypal merging system NGC 4038/39, “The Antennae”. Both tails are relatively bright in the UV , especially in the vicinity of the Tidal Dwarf Galaxy candidates at the end of the southern tail. The UV light generally falls within the optically delineated tails, although the UV light is considerably more structured, with a rem...

Tidal Tails of Star Clusters

Based on recent findings of a formation mechanism of substructure in tidal tails by Küpper, Macleod & Heggie (2008) we investigate a more comprehensive set of N -body models of star clusters on orbits about a Milky-Way-like potential. We find that the predicted epicyclic overdensities arise in any tidal tail no matter which orbit the cluster follows as long as the cluster lives long enough for ...
